Summary Oak Grove participated in the Georgia Assessment of Performance on School Standards (GAPSS) Analysis in the 2008-2009 school year. This study was intended to provide a process of data collection and verification of a school’s status and offer specific direction for school improvement based on the Georgia Department of Education School Keys of Excellence.
After the data collection process, it was determined based on the data collected during classroom observation that the effective use of technology during class period and technology integration into instruction was a weakness. Oak Grove scored an 18% for the use of technology in the class period and 28% in the area of technology integration during instruction. Based on these findings, the school has developed a technology plan that includes parents and teachers working together to provide Wii Activeboard in classrooms and training on various software programs. My Performance Improvement Intervention project will focus on integrating the use of digital cameras in the classroom.
Background of organization Oak Grove Elementary was founded in 1958. During that time, the Oak Grove area was a rural farm community outside Atlanta, Georgia. The neighborhood has changed dramatically since 2000. The small ranch homes have now been replaced by multiple homes and mini-mansions. The community is comprised of highly educated, dual income professional families. With no apartments in the Oak Grove school area, most families live in single family homes. This makes a relatively stable community with low mobility. This community is now considered suburbia of metro Atlanta. Mission Oak Grove’s mission is to inspire creativity, curiosity, responsibility, and tolerance in a safe and stimulating atmosphere where all learners are able to achieve their personal best.
Current Organization Oak Grove Elementary currently serves 644 students in grades Pre-K through 5th. The student population consist of 75% white, 11% African-American, 8% Asian, 4% Hispanic and 4% multi-racial. Less than 5% of the students are on free and reduced lunch.
The school has goals of maintaining and increasing the percentage of students in the “exceeds” range on the state’s Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT). There are additional goal to increase the use of technology in all areas and to provide professional development to the faculty and staff. The key personnel at Oak Grove Elementary would be school’s principal along with the school’s Building Leadership Team (BLT).
